As a speech therapist, I frequently encounter questions about what exactly happens during a speech and language evaluation. It can feel overwhelming. But, don't worry, I will walk you through the process, step by step.
Intake Paperwork
Before the evaluation itself, you'll receive intake paperwork. This paperwork covers procedural forms, release of information, photo consent, and more. One crucial form is the pediatric case history questionnaire. While it might seem extensive, this document provides invaluable insight into your child's medical and developmental journey. From birth history to developmental milestones, every detail helps us understand your child better, guiding the evaluation process.
Types of Evaluations
There are two primary types of evaluations:
1. Speech-Only Evaluations:
2. Speech and Language Evaluations:
Assessment Process
During the evaluation, various assessments are conducted based on the type of evaluation chosen. Formal tests, informal observations, and parent interviews provide a holistic view of your child's communication abilities. Additionally, the structure and function of the oral motor cavity are evaluated, and if necessary, voice and fluency are observed.
Duration of Assessment
The duration of the assessment varies but typically lasts between 1 to 2 hours. Parents are encouraged to be present throughout the evaluation process to provide additional context and support.
Evaluation Results
After the evaluation, you'll receive feedback on your child's performance and any recommendations for therapy. Evaluation scores and detailed reports will be provided via email for your review in a timely manner. Evaluation turn around typically takes 1 week. If more information or assesment is required, the evaluator will reach out and let you know that further time is required.
School-Based Evaluations
If your child's evaluation takes place at school and you cannot attend, don't worry. You'll receive updates via phone call or text message, ensuring you're kept informed about the evaluation session.
Follow-Up Process
After the evaluation, depending on the therapist's recommendation, therapy will be scheduled. A thorough plan of care will be developed, outlining individualized goals tailored to your child's communication needs.
Types of Therapy Approaches
We provide a holistic approach to therapy, ensuring not only that our clients' goals are being met but also addressing their sensory, motor, and emotional needs. Therapy sessions for most learners are child-led, play-based and strength based. EVERY session for gestalt learners are child-led.
